The longer days and higher temperatures of spring and summer inspire people to spend time doing things they don't do at other times of the year: swimming in the local pool, enjoying barbecues and picnics with friends, even simply lounging in the warm sunshine. But some of these activities can be hazardous to your health if you don't know how to take the right precautions. Here are some helpful hints on how to stay safe and healthy this summer.

What is Laughter? The serious business of laughter ...or ... can something this much fun really be this good for you? Few people would deny that laughter is a good medicine, but not many people realise what a powerful tool for transformation it is. Not only has research on the physical health benefits astounded the medical community, but also we are demonstrating the mental/emotional benefits of laughter in both business innovation and teambuilding. Perhaps even more surprisingly, we are seeing profound healing taking place through laughter.

Dr. Susan Wicklund took her first step toward the front line of the abortion wars when she was in her early 20s, a high school graduate with a few community college credits, working dead-end jobs. She became pregnant. She had an abortion. It was legal, but it was ghastly. Her counseling, she recalls, was limited to instructions to pay in advance, in cash, and to go to the emergency room if she had a problem. During the procedure itself, her every question drew the same response: “Shut up!”

A good night's sleep may reduce a child's risk of becoming obese, according to a US study. The latest research adds to a growing body of evidence that links a lack of adequate sleep to weight gain in both adults and children. Of the children who slept 10-12 hours each night at age eight, around 12% were obese by 11, compared to 22% of those who slept less than nine hours.

ERIE, Pa. — When doctors told John Kanzius he had nine months to live, he quietly thanked God for his blessings and prepared to die.
Then 58, he had lived a good life. Now he had leukemia and was ready to accept his fate, but the visits to the cancer ward shook him. Faces haunted him — the bald and bandaged heads, bodies slumped in wheelchairs, and children who could not play.
Like him, they had endured chemo, which caused their weight to plummet, hands to shake, bodies to weaken and immune systems to break down. Kanzius thought there had to be a more humane way to treat cancer.

Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Merck & Co.'s Gardasil, the cervical cancer vaccine for girls, also prevented signs of the disease in women older than 26 in a study that may broaden its use.
Merck will ask U.S. regulators by the end of the year to expand use of Gardasil to women through age 45, the Whitehouse Station, New Jersey-based company said today in a statement. Gardasil was cleared last year for females age 9 through 26 and recommended as part of routine vaccinations for girls 11 and 12.

In a packed-out auditorium, the audience waited with anticipation for the "show" to begin. But this wasn't a typical night's entertainment - they were there to watch live heart surgery being performed. With the help of cameras and a satellite link, surgeon Francis Wells was able to open up open heart surgery to more than 200 members of the public. "I do not think that the human body should be the province of only specialists," said the heart surgeon from Papworth Hospital NHS Trust in Cambridge.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 — Pressured by regulators, the German pharmaceutical giant Bayer AG announced Monday that it had agreed to withdraw the controversial heart surgery drug Trasylol after a Canadian study suggested that it increased death rates. Dr. John K. Jenkins, a leading official of the Food and Drug Administration, said, “F.D.A. could not identify a specific patient population where the benefits of using Trasylol could outweigh the risks.”

Consumers suffering from recall fatigue should get used to news of contaminated food as underfunded regulatory agencies struggle to police a burgeoning food system that's supplied by all corners of the world market, food safety experts said yesterday. Just this weekend, more than 1 million pounds of E. coli-contaminated ground beef was recalled by Pennsylvania-based Cargill Meat Solutions Corp. from stores including Giant Food and Wegmans in Maryland.
