Swordfighting as a sport has existed since ancient Egyptian times and has been practised in many forms in various cultures since then. Although jousting and tournament combat were popular sports in the European middle ages, modern F.I.E. fencing owes more to the unarmoured duelling forms that evolved from 16th century rapier combat. Rapiers were edged having a military role for thrusting into chinks of heavy armour.

The history of the Winter Olympics is a shaky one indeed. As early as 1894 when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was established, ice skating was proposed for the Olympic program. In spite of this, it was not until 1908, fourteen years later, that an ice-skating event was held at the Summer Olympics in London. This first Olympic figure skating event was won with little difficulty by the Swedish champion Ulrich Salchow, the skater who invented the backwards one revolution jump that bears his name, and Madge Syers of Britain. The German competitors, Anna Hubler and Heinrich Berger, won the pairs event.

The origins of Handball are a subject of great debate. One view is that it was invented in Germany, back in the late 19th century, as an outdoor sport to keep soccer players fit during the summer months. Outdoor Handball involved 11 players on each side and was played on a virtually fullsize turf soccer ground with soccer goals. It was mainly played with soccer rules, except it was played with the hands and kicking the ball was illegal rather than the other way round.

Capoeira is a 400-year-old martial art that blends music, dance, singing, and acrobatics to create a holistic approach to teaching self-defense. Originating in Africa, Capoeira was brought to Brazil by captured slaves from Angola. In this foreign land the Angolan people developed their practice into a method of defending themselves against their violent overlords. Because of their predicament, these enslaved people had to disguise their training as recreational song and dance.

Boxing, also known as pugilism or the sweet science, has roots that go all the way back to ancient Greece and Rome. Back then fights would take place without gloves but with just leather taped on to the hands. This resulted in even more gruesome, deadly battles.

In one form or another, the variant games of present day golf were clearly enjoyed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. The game persisted over the centuries and the form that it took and rules that were applied varied as widely as the terrain the game was played over. In short, the game consisted of knocking a ball from one pre-designated place to another where the ball was to be struck off a predetermined object in the least number of blows. Games often extended from village to village.
