On Dec. 21, in an interview with the UK's Daily Telegraph, actor Sacha Baron Cohen announced the retirement of his two most popular alter egos -- hip-hop wannabe Ali G and Kazakh journalist Borat. Not everyone was heartbroken by the news. To begin with, there's the multitude of people pranked by his feature film, 2006's "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan"; Baron Cohen has jokingly estimated the number of resulting lawsuits as "about 3,000."

He made us laugh with his excruciating and uneven wax jobs as a 40-year-old virgin. He made us cringe with his equally excruciating one-liners on "The Office." But for Steve Carell, the film "Dan in Real Life" presented the Golden Globe winner with a whole new set of challenges and opportunities. Carell talks about what was certainly a departure from his typically atypical role. "I tried as long as I could to just play idiots, people who have problems emotionally -- but this guy, he is relatively normal." Carell explains that the character of Dan is "a guy who has just lost his wife and is just doing the best he can. He's doing all he can to keep himself afloat."

Screenwriters moved to the picket lines this morning, as last-minute negotiations between the writers’ unions and producers failed to avert a strike over payments from producers for so-called new media, among other issues. About 75 members of Writers Guild East set up a picket line at Rockefeller Center, just above the fabled ice rink. Picketers chanted: “No money? No downloads. No downloads? No peace.”

NEW YORK — Tom Stoppard's latest play, "Rock 'n' Roll," begins in 1968, when a brief flowering of political liberalization in Communist Czechoslovakia was crushed by a Soviet military invasion. The seeds of that "Prague Spring" were violently scattered, but they took root and slowly grew; and two decades later, as Communism collapsed all across Europe, Czechoslovakia finally emerged into freedom.

"At 18, I went to the University of Colorado. I was asked to leave after a year. I went to Europe to study art," Redford says during an interview at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. "I was living a very Bohemian life with a lot of other students. They would talk about politics all the time. And I had nothing to say. That's when I became determined to really read up about my country so I would have an answer for their questions."

NEW YORK - Adam Pearl wandered through his mother's Manhattan book-launch party last week, looking spiffy in a sweater vest and button-down shirt. It was logical that the 5-year-old was there, because his mom, Mariane Pearl, views her work as a dialogue of sorts with her little boy.
